AGEING SUITS US

When you’ve looked dram fine since 1823, every day is Throwback Thursday. Along the way, we’ve learned a thing or two about making smooth, characterful whisky — and the friendships that come with it.

LET THE GOOD TIMES FLOW

Being a smooth single malt and all, dates are important to us at the Auchentoshan distillery. After all, milestones mark the maturing of our whiskies as they reach peak “this flavour will blow your mind.”

Getting the barrel rolling

John Bulloch takes ownership of the Auchentoshan estate and establishes the Duntocher Distillery to avert any inquiries from the customs and excise men.

Our distillery is established

Auchentoshan is legally licensed as a whisky distillery by one Thorne, an engineer from Greenock.

"AU-KEN-TOH-SHAN" is named

After a period of financial difficulty, Duntocher Distillery is sold to John Hart & Alexander Filshie and our new name comes to life. John Bulloch continues to live on the estate until his death at the age of 87 in 1846.

The golden years

Brothers George & John MacLachlan purchase the distillery, marking the beginning of stability and success for 57 years.

That's so Auchentoshan

The distillery paves community friendships in a characteristically smooth Auchentoshan way: warming the people of surrounding districts with complimentary drams at the launches of HMS Queen Mary (1934) and HMS Queen Elizabeth (1938).

One dram thing after another

A German bomb raid severely damages the distillery, destroying a warehouse. Production continues until the start of WW2 but halts with the bombing of the Clyde.

Back to business

As the United Kingdom emerges from its war footing, it’s time to refocus. Production is back on!

Changing hands

Acquired by prominent brewers J&R Tennet Ltd, who choose to use malted barley from their breweries in Edinburgh.

Always in style

Taken over by Eadie Cairns Ltd, with stylish gentleman John Milne at the reins until his death at 61. In his obituary, The Glasgow Herald describes him as the “last bowler-hatted gentleman.”

The OG Influencer

Our whisky is used across many popular Scotch whisky blends like Deerstalker, Duncan MacGregor and Crown Vat.

Distillery sold for £325,000

The new generation of ownership involves the well-known Stanley P. Morrison family and the Japanese whisky giant Suntory Ltd.

Hello Suntory

Auchentoshan is eventually sold to Suntory, kicking off an era of one prestigious award after another.

Today

Energised and ever more inclusive, Auchentoshan embarks on a new journey celebrating the versatility of our liquid and the beauty of our eclectic past.
